I’m a sociologist and writer examining the fraught relationship between capitalism and democracy with a particular interest in philanthropy’s tendency to undermine our capacity for transformative political action. Previously at Stanford, I founded and co-direct Private Wealth and the Public Good—an initiative using research, reform, and public policy to counteract the high costs of extreme inequality.
