I’m a sociologist and writer. My work examines the fraught intersection of capitalism and democracy with a particular interest in philanthropy’s tendency to undermine our collective ability to participate, organize, and act politically. Formerly at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, I am founder and co-director of the Project on Private Wealth and Democracy—an initiative working to counteract philanthropy's civic and democratic dysfunctions through research, reform, and public policy.
